Deliver a meal and a smile this summer!

Huntsville Junior Service League has proudly been serving one of the many routes of Meals on Wheels in Walker County for the past two years.  It is such a worthy project and rewarding to both the recipients and the volunteers.

JSL member, Denise recently shared this story…Our family has been delivering Meals on Wheels through the Senior Center of Walker County for 2 years now. It has been a wonderful experience for the kids to be able to talk with some of the seniors and give hugs and smiles to them. Usually I am just the driver and I watch them at the doors. Last night was a late night for us so today I did the route by myself. I was truly blessed today as I got to speak with each person, hug them, find out how their days had been and share smiles. Over half of the men and women asked me where my boys were today. They missed seeing them and didn’t expect me at their door. The small connection of delivering a meal is one that makes a difference to a lot of these seniors. It truly was more a blessing to give than receive for me today! If you are looking for something to do with your children or a way for you to help out I would highly recommend the Meals on Wheels program. They are in need of volunteers and it only took me less than an hour today to give 14 people a smile going into their weekend. 15 if you count me!

During the summer, the Senior Center needs extra volunteers to help deliver when regular volunteers are on vacation.  Please consider if you have a free day or two to spare.  There are routes to fill on Monday, Thursday, and Friday and then various days due to traveling volunteers.  Call Kasie at the Walker County Senior Center (936-295-6151) if you would like to volunteer to deliver a meal and a smile this summer!
