The Huntsville Junior Service League has been serving Walker County for over 40 years. Because each year we have a new group of ladies join the league, we are continually learning new ways to serve our community. Our projects stem from the passions of our membership. Three years ago, passion turned into a beautiful event honoring mothers and babies.
In the spring of 2014, the JSL hosted a baby shower for 25 ladies and their babies. The ladies were chosen from mothers who had recently completed parenting classes at the Pregnancy Care Center. The Sip-n-See style shower was so lovely and greatly appreciated by the new and soon-to-be moms who attended. Many of the mothers had never been thrown a shower before and delighted in being a little spoiled!
Each baby was given a classic nursery rhyme book and a present from our table of “dream gifts” which included items such as strollers, baby bedding, blanket sets, breast pumps, bottle sets, designer diaper bags, and so much more.
Every mom in attendance was able to create a unique onesie for their baby while they enjoyed cake and punch and a little “mom talk”.
PCC board member, Janie Farris attended the shower and sent the following letter after the event… On behalf of the PCC Board of Directors we appreciate everything the JSL has done for this Ministry and for the many other ways you have served this community. The PCC is blessed, as are our clients, to partner together to serve the women, babies, and families that come through our door. Thank you again and may God bless each of you!
We have been honored to make this beautiful celebration of life an annual event. Each year a new group of young mothers has been invited and have enjoyed an afternoon of fun and fellowship with other mothers. We have been privileged to pamper them and their new babies with wonderful gifts they may not have received anywhere else. Volunteering for the Sip-n-See barely feels like work and has the great perk “Ooohing and Aaahhing” over precious new babies.
The lives of the mothers and babies are impacted not only from the gifts that may not have been financially feasible any other way, but in the feeling of love, acceptance and happiness that should always surround new baby’s life.
Since the first year, 75 babies’ lives have been celebrated through the JSL Sip-n-See. Over two thousand dollars has been spent in hosting the shower and purchasing the gifts in three years. JSL is able to host such an event due to the funds raised through our Mother of Pearl Brunch and Auction and Easy as Pie sale each fall. We are grateful for the support of our community which allows us to reach out to so many different organizations and charities and to fill needs where we can in Walker County.
Our largest fundraiser and celebration of women in service, The Mother of Pearl Brunch and Auction, is April 29th. To make the event as successful as possible, we are looking for businesses or individuals to help sponsor event.
